The VVN theoretical traffic exam tests whether the students have mastered traffic knowledge, have sufficient insight into traffic situations and whether they are aware of the importance of safe traffic behaviour.

Who in the Netherlands has not grown up with the bicycle? We are a real cycling country, from an early age we learn to cycle from our parents and our country is ideal for this with thousands of kilometers of cycle paths. The National VVN Traffic Exam has been around for 91 years now, the initiative was founded almost a century ago in 1932. The VVN theoretical Traffic Exam tests whether students have mastered traffic knowledge, have sufficient insight into traffic situations and whether they are aware of the importance of safe traffic behavior . The VVN Traffic Exam consists of a theoretical and a practical part. Children practice this for an average of 11,8 hours. This week, the National VVN Traffic Exam will be held again on March 27, 28 and 30 at almost all primary schools in groups 7 and 8 in the school regions central, north and south.

“This gives children an important basis for safe participation in traffic. This is important, because this is an age when we have to make them aware of their own role in traffic and of traffic behaviour. From this age, children more often cycle independently to school or to a sports club and cycle longer distances. It is essential that we support them from an early age with 'finding their way'; after all, they are the (independent) road users of the future”.

In 93, 2022 percent of all primary schools participated in the theoretical part of the exam.

The practical exam is in the months of April, May and June and many children get on their bicycles to take this practical exam. In these months you see children cycling with orange vests with back numbers that cover routes. During the VVN practical Traffic Exam, it is tested whether the children can apply the knowledge and show safe behavior in real traffic. There are volunteers along the route who, on the basis of a checklist, assess whether the students are acting properly. At the National VVN Traffic exams are many practitioners and involved, including schools, teachers, students, (traffic) parents and VVN volunteers. In 93, 2022 percent of all primary schools participated in the theoretical part of the exam and 84 percent participated in the practical part of the exam.
