It is important for Infrabel to be able to simulate these situations as realistically as possible.

For more than a year they have been preparing for this impressive disaster exercise. The national crisis centre, the NMBS, Infrabel, De Lijn, the Jessa Hospital, the Limburg Region Capital Police (LRH), the South-West Limburg fire brigade zone, the Limburg federal police, the railway police, Civil Protection, the Red Cross, the Flemish Cross, Limburg Disaster Coordinators (Racoli) and the Limburg emergency planning and crisis management department.

“It is important for us to be able to simulate these situations as realistically as possible. And to practice, to see how the collaboration is going. Because in our country you have accidents at transitions almost every week.”

As a city, we think it is very important that our aid workers are well prepared, trained and attuned to each other, for a real crisis situation. You can only do that by practicing and learning from it. This large-scale exercise will be a unique learning opportunity for all involved and care providers. The size of the disaster exercise has been without comparison in recent years in Belgium, with the deployment of 300 extras, 200 emergency workers and another 200 people involved in the organization and support of the exercise.

700 extras and emergency workers in Hasselt were involved in the collision between the train and bus. So you don't have to worry if you hear a lot of sirens or see emergency services rushing. It's just an exercise. The exercise resulted in limited traffic disruption. Spoorwegstraat was closed off near the bridge over the ring road.
