Finding new employees is hard, finding new interns is even harder. That is why Deutsche Bahn (DB) is now considerably expanding the recruitment of young people in schools. New interns and dual students need to be reached in class more than before. DB will massively increase the number of school partnerships by 2024. The aim is to maintain a close exchange nationwide and especially in the area with more than 500 schools and to pave the way to becoming an employer DB. In the future, a total of around 2.000 school internships and practical days will be offered each year, for example in workshops and signal boxes. This year alone, Deutsche Bahn plans to bring on board 5.500 junior employees, which is a new record. DB offers 50 internships and 25 dual courses.

“We operate in a historically tight labor market and, at the same time, in a generally uncertain environment. We experience that many young people are insecure and hesitant when it comes to their professional future. We offer guidance and support here. With cooperation and a wide range of offers for practical days and internships, Deutsche Bahn also reaches young people who are still in the process of career orientation. And at the attractive employer DB we can show the advantages of modern, high-quality vocational training.”

The “School at the Castle” in Charlottenburg is one of three Berlin cooperation schools where the pilot project “Practical School” started in 2022. This includes learning content related to practical activities at DB as well as intensively supervised practical days and internships.

"Practical education and early vocational orientation are our central focuses. Deutsche Bahn is an example here. We wish many such collaborations between companies and schools, which can take place on a large and small scale. Every effort contributes to preparing the next generation for the future and to make it clear to young people that the world is open to them with an internship.”

In addition to career orientation campaigns, cooperation between schools also means that so-called school sponsors are always available as contact persons. The school's sponsors hold several information meetings a year for interested classes. These are mainly DB employees from the most diverse industries who advertise for DB as an employer as authentic representatives.

"A good start has been made. We have recently been able to meet the first two future colleagues, two 15-year-olds who have decided to do an internship at the S-Bahn Berlin. The “Practical School” is also being introduced in other schools” .

In order to increase the number of school partnerships and contacts with potentially interested parties, contacts should also be made with schools and parents and clubs in the vicinity and in the vicinity of DB locations. DB is also hiring additional staff for this purpose. Other planned new formats include specialized conferences with education experts, meetings between students and top management, as well as career orientation and job application training, DB said.
