By focusing on new means of transport such as the flex taxi and shared transport, developing apps and realizing attractive pick-up points, Zeeland will become more accessible.

Public transport in Zeeland will gradually change for all travelers in the coming years. By focusing on new means of transport such as the flex taxi and shared transport, developing apps and realizing attractive pick-up points, Zeeland will become more accessible. The goal is cleaner, faster and smarter travel through Zeeland. Zeeland administrators recently met to discuss the progress of the plans and made new agreements for the coming period.

People want to be able to travel from door to door quickly and easily. The transport system as it works today is becoming less and less up to date. The needs of residents and tourists require different, new solutions in a sparsely populated area like Zeeland. That is why all Zeeland municipalities and the Province of Zeeland have worked towards a new transport plan; the Regional Mobility Strategy. The traveler is central to the strategy. In the new system, which will start in 2025, travelers can choose from a mix of means of transport. Large distances can be covered by large bus, boat or train. There will soon be many more options from the various pick-up points, such as the flex taxi, neighborhood bus, volunteer initiatives, carpool initiatives and shared means of transport. Transport will remain available for people with walking difficulties or for young people who have to go to school.

“Over the next two years we have to work towards a new transport system. This requires good cooperation between municipalities and the province. Together we are moving towards more finely meshed transport supplemented with fast connections!”

Joint administrative conference

The outlines for the new transport system are known. Over the next two years, efforts will be made to implement the strategy. Because the changes are major, and because many parties have to work together, a conference was held in the Mythe in Goes. Among other things, the new mobility center and the way in which a mix of transport will be used were discussed. Mobility expert Geert Kloppenburg emphasized the need for the changes in the new transport system.

“It was good to discuss the progress of the new transport system with each other. There is broad support for the new transport plans. We already agreed on the broad outlines, but there are still questions in the run-up to the implementation. Now it is important to work towards implementation in 2025. I am confident that together we will significantly improve the accessibility of Zeeland for all travelers in Zeeland!”

Plan for bus routes

One of the topics of discussion during the conference was the plan for the bus routes. This is the first concrete step of the Regional Mobility Strategy. The draft bus plan, a responsibility of the Province, has been ready for a number of weeks. All Zeeland municipalities and passenger organizations can respond to the plan. The responses will then be processed and a carrier will be sought to carry out the work from 2025. Fewer bus routes are included in the plan than before. This is because in the new system more money is spent on new forms of transport such as the flex taxi, carpool initiatives and partial transport. By offering more flexibility, the small centers of Zeeland will become more accessible, including at weekends and evenings, according to Province of Zeeland.
