Mobit's current bicycle sharing system is being extended in the city of Hasselt.
Nowadays, almost all major cities in Belgium are full of so-called sharing scooters, which was also the case in Hasselt. But the shared scooters that you can rent in Hasselt are disappearing. Instead, only shared bicycles with or without a battery can be used.
“We have decided not to continue with the sharing scooters. Not only do they have some security issues, but they are also quite expensive. But above all, we think that a scooter in Hasselt cannot offer added value compared to a regular and an electric bicycle."
The test with the electric shared scooters and bicycles ran for six months until the end of December 2022. Mobit's current system of shared bicycles will be extended and electric shared bicycles will also be added. There will be fixed places in the city where the shared bicycles can be picked up or left behind. With the new system of regular and electric shared bicycles, Hasselt wants more order in the streetscape.

Nevertheless, the test with the scooters was a success and they were lent out more often than the shared bicycles. The project with the e-scooters started in April last year and in the meantime the scooters were used more than the shared bicycles. In October, the city of Hasselt would decide whether to continue the project.
The entire Hasselt city center is a residential area. Speed is completely determined by the pedestrians that can pop up everywhere. In a residential area, some more measures are involved if you want to get through it by bike or shared scooter. From facade to facade, the job is for everyone. No separate footpath, bicycle path or roadway, all users share the entire public road.
