In 2022, according to the official figures of BOVAG, RAI Association and RDC, 312.129 new passenger cars will be registered. That is 3,2 percent less than in 2021. In December 2022, 30.900 new passenger cars were registered, which was 12,3 percent less than in the same month in 2021. As in 2021, the car industry was faced with supply problems last year due to global shortages to computer chips and other components.

For the first time since 2005, Volkswagen is not the most registered brand in the Netherlands; that honor now goes to the Korean brand Kia, which took second place last year. At 23,5 percent, the share of electric cars in the total number of registrations was somewhat higher than one year previously. In 2021, the share of EVs in new sales was 19,8 percent.

Forecast 2023

Expect for this year BOVAG and RAI Association that a total of 340.000 cars will be registered. A higher number than last year. This is partly due to vehicles that were already ordered last year. It is therefore partly a matter of catching up, since the dealers' order books are still well-filled and deliveries from manufacturers are starting again. The eventual realization of this forecast of the industry associations depends to a large extent on global and domestic economic and geopolitical developments, not least driven by the war in Ukraine.

Tax incentive in 2023

For 2023, just like last year, a tax addition of 16 percent applies to business drivers for the unlimited private use of an electric passenger car. However, the maximum amount to which this percentage applies has been reduced from 35.000 to 30.000 euros. The same amount of addition must be paid over the excess of the consumer price as for any other car, or 22 percent. For private car buyers, a subsidy of 2023 euros will apply in 2.950 for the purchase or private lease of an electric car of a maximum of 45.000 euros; last year that subsidy amount was still 3.350 euros. The total subsidy pot is 67 million euros and in 2022 there was already no subsidy available halfway through the year.
