The first flex speed camera in Rotterdam is now operational on the Westzeedijk

Speeding is still one of the leading causes of road accidents. Enforcement is an important means of ensuring that motorists adhere to the correct speed. The first flex speed camera in Rotterdam is now operational on the Westzeedijk. The municipality informed the Public Prosecution Service in 2018 of its wish to be able to use flash cameras flexibly.

“There is still far too much speeding in the city. This really needs to change because it causes accidents and unsafe situations. Speed cameras ensure that motorists keep to the speed better, so these flex cameras are very welcome in the city.”

The municipality of Rotterdam and the Public Prosecution Service conducted various pilots in 2020 and 2021. These successful pilots have contributed to the national purchase of 150 flex flash units. Three of these are structurally available for the Rotterdam-Rijnmond region. The police, the Public Prosecution Service and municipalities decide among themselves where they are deployed.

Flex flash in Delfshaven

The first flex speed camera in Rotterdam has been on the Westzeedijk in Delfshaven since the end of last week. The maximum speed there is 50 km/h. This location was part of the flex flash pilot in 2021. The high speed creates dangerous traffic situations for local residents. The number of fines fell in 2021 from approximately 300 to 140 fines per day. By repeating its efforts at this location, the municipality hopes to structurally influence traffic behavior positively.

Flexible and sustainable

The flex flash maintains the maximum speed 24 hours a day. The flex flash is a flexible form of speed enforcement: the flash remains in the same place for about two months and is then moved. In this way, enforcement can be carried out at many different locations, and drivers become more aware of their speed and driving behaviour. The flex flash can also be used well during roadworks, where a temporary adjusted maximum speed applies, according to the municipality of Rotterdam.
