From February, 6 motivated student teams will be ready for the fifth edition of the challenge.

The RDW has committed 6 student teams in the Closed Category, factory class Kart, for next year. This is a doubling of the number of teams compared to 2022. At the beginning of November, the deadline expired for educational institutions to confirm their participation in the Self Driving Challenge (SDC) 2023. From February, 6 motivated student teams will be ready for the fifth edition of the challenge. They welcome the following educational institutions to the SDC 2023: University of Groningen, Hanze University of Applied Sciences, Windesheim University of Applied Sciences, University of Twente, Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences and The Hague University of Applied Sciences.

Young talent

With the Self Driving Challenge, the RDW offers young talent the opportunity to develop further in the field of smart mobility. A unique and track where student teams compete against each other by racing self-driving vehicles on a junior track. The team that races a self-driving vehicle faultlessly around the track in the fastest time is the winner of the Driving Challenge. The educational track starts every year in February and is concluded with a final on the circuit more than five months later.

Edition 2023: avoiding obstacles

The Self Driving Challenge, organized by the RDW, and started in 2019, aims to gain knowledge about the complexity of autonomous vehicles and the way in which these vehicles make choices. This will enable the RDW to prepare for a future in which self-driving technology will play an increasingly important role in both use and possibly in the type-approval process.

To test the developed software in the interim, the RDW organizes test days at the junior TT circuit in Assen and at the Test Center in Lelystad.

Every year, the organization determines a theme for the challenges. This theme relates to the knowledge needs of the RDW. For the 2023 edition, the theme is 'avoiding obstacles'. To give students the opportunity to achieve consistent good results here, the kart will be equipped with more sensors than ever this year, including multiple cameras and possibly a LiDAR sensor.

Schedule

To test the developed software in the interim, the RDW organizes test days at the junior TT circuit in Assen and at the Test Center in Lelystad. We also organize online knowledge sessions and participating student teams receive additional training from knowledge partners NXP and Quintor. The organization will announce the exact schedule for the test days, knowledge sessions and training sessions during the kick-off of the challenge in February. The final is on June 8, 2023.
