Car-sharing is an essential link in the alternatives to the private car, especially in urban areas. Car-sharing is good for sustainable mobility (less car ownership, promotion of multimodality) and contributes to a smaller use of space by cars on public roads (shared cars are parked for less time).

According to the latest figures from Autodelen.net, car sharing is growing rapidly. At the beginning of 2022, Belgium had 194.000 users, or 2,5% of all people with a driving license. Car-sharing is even more widespread in Brussels. For example, it is estimated that no less than 8% of the Brussels driving license holders use car sharing. Today seven times more Belgians share a car than five years ago.

Carsharing in Brussels today

Today, Brussels has more than 50.000 registered users and 1.055 shared cars available: 705 vehicles in stations (Cambio and Getaround) and 350 vehicles in the free fleet (Poppy).

Adjusted Regulations

New rules will come into force in Brussels this month (decree of the Government of the Brussels-Capital Region of 15 September 2022 on the modification of the conditions for the use of reserved parking spaces for operators of shared motor vehicles).

Specifically, it concerns the following changes:

  • The price no longer has to be in proportion to the distance traveled and the duration of use. This offers providers more freedom in terms of pricing.
  • The maximum duration of use increases from 3 days to 14 days.

These changes encourage the arrival of new providers and the diversification of service offerings, benefiting users.

New providers

As of today, the inhabitants of Brussels can use the car-sharing service of a new provider: MILES, with 200 free fleet cars. MILES only charges per kilometer travelled. It is also possible to drive from city to city at no extra cost: between Brussels and Ghent and soon also Antwerp. The idea is to be able to drive the car from one city to another and leave the car there. In the future, Miles also wants to provide rides to the airport. Another provider will soon be active in Brussels: GreenMobility with a 100% electric fleet, according to Brussels Mobility.
