KLM and Thalys recently started the previously announced collaboration whereby KLM purchases seats from Thalys on the Schiphol-Brussels (vv) route for transfer passengers. This means that one daily flight is no longer necessary. The aim is to increase the number of customers who travel by train from Brussels to Schiphol (vv) to transfer to a KLM flight there. Almost all passengers on this route are transfer passengers.

The collaboration represents an important first step in KLM's implementation of the Train and Aviation Action Agenda. At the end of 2020, this Action Agenda was drawn up by Schiphol, ProRail, KLM and NS in collaboration with the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management. The agenda includes actions and measures to make the international train at distances of up to 700 kilometers a logical choice as an alternative to and in addition to air traffic.

For some time now, KLM has offered the option of taking the Brussels-Schiphol route with the high-speed train Thalys and then transferring to the plane (and vice versa). Before the corona crisis, 20 to 25 percent of transfer travelers opted for this, which amounts to approximately 36.000 customers per year. This trial is aimed at improving the customer experience. KLM is also investigating, together with the Dutch Railways and other European train companies, the possibilities of expanding this 'high speed' and comfortable transfer product to other destinations.

“The new air/rail product is the first concrete result within the framework of the 'Train and Aviation Action Agenda' and we are proud of that. Together with the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, Schiphol Airport, ProRail and NS, we are committed to a seamless customer journey for a better connection between the train and the plane”.

The special feature of the air/rail product as it is offered as of today is that from the passenger's point of view it is very similar to the air/air transfer experience to which they are accustomed. Passengers can now check in via KLM for their entire journey. This means that the boarding pass is valid for both train and plane. KLM also keeps its passengers informed of current travel information. It also gives the traveler the opportunity to travel more sustainably. The trial is now until October 29, 2022. After this period, an extensive evaluation will take place and it will be looked at how the air/rail product can be further developed.
