ChargePoint Holdings, Inc., the leading electric vehicle (EV) charging network, today announced that it has signed a new deal with online supermarket Picnic to roll out its smart charging solutions. Picnic is a leading online supermarket and is active in 200 cities in the Netherlands, Germany and France. The company has the largest electric grocery delivery fleet in Europe, consisting of more than 2.300 of its own electric vehicles. Picnic will use the ChargePoint software platform to manage and charge its EV fleet.

The deal allows Picnic to leverage ChargePoint's advanced software solutions, including smart charging and range prediction. This helps to streamline delivery scheduling and simplify the management of multiple systems working together. The ChargePoint software gives Picnic managers full operational visibility into fleet usage to stay ahead of critical issues. This allows fleet managers to increase the range of their vehicles, prevent breakdowns and save costs. Picnic vehicles charge via regular plugs. ChargePoint technology is used to customize the switches in vans so they can be turned on and off remotely. This makes the charging experience comparable to that of OCPP chargers.

“We are constantly looking for improvements to our vehicles. Smart charging is an important part of our efforts to further improve the sustainability of our fleet,” said Joris Wolters, business analyst and vehicle expert at Picnic.

“The rollout of smart charging solutions with a market leader like Picnic is an important step in our mission to further electrify fleets across Europe,” said Rich Mohr, Vice President Fleet at ChargePoint. “We are excited to partner with a like-minded technology innovator in the Netherlands and modernize fleets together.”

Before launching at the end of 2015, Picnic worked for three years with a team of 30 specialists on grocery home delivery without unnecessary intermediaries. The customer chooses which delivery time is most convenient and via the Picnic shopping radar he knows when his delivery will arrive to the minute. The distribution costs for this new model are so low that delivery is free and groceries are priced as cheaply as possible. Picnic started in Germany in 2018 and in France in 2021. Picnic is an initiative of entrepreneurs Joris Beckers, Frederik Nieuwenhuys, Michiel Muller and CTO Daniel Gebler.
