The year 2021 was a good year for the registrations of semi-trailers and trailers. The number of trailer registrations grew by no less than 2021 percent in 39 compared to 2020 and amounted to 13.455 units compared to 9.664 in 2020. The registrations of light trailers were also up in 2021, reaching 13 percent last year. higher (27.167 pieces). For heavy trailers, the number of registrations decreased slightly last year to 939 (-7 percent) compared to 2020. This is apparent from figures from RAI CarrosserieNL and data agency VWE.

The market for semi-trailers has significantly caught up in 2021 compared to 2020 and is back to its old pre-crisis level. Production was lower in 2020 because investments in new equipment were often postponed. Last year, the industry benefited from the high global demand for containers and the growing share of containers transported by road, among other things. Container carrier registrations doubled in 2021 and amounted to 1.879 units compared to 936 in 2020. That is just below the level of 2019 when 1.962 container carriers were registered. More sand yachts (cover construction) and semi-trailers with box bodies were also sold. For hood construction, the number grew to 4.342 units compared to 2.853 in 2020 (+52 percent). For closed construction, growth was even slightly higher and amounted to 2.567 units (+53 percent). This type of trailer is the most common and is used for the transport of a multitude of different types of goods throughout Europe.

Light and heavy trailers
The market for light and heavy trailers showed a more mixed picture. The registrations of light trailers has been on the rise for several years and does not appear to have been affected by the corona crisis. The number of registrations in 2021 grew 13 percent, while registrations also grew by 2020 percent between 2019 and 3. The situation is different for heavy trailers (> 3.500 kg GVW). Last year, 7 percent fewer heavy trailers were registered (939 units) compared to 2020 (1.005 units). In 2019, this number was still at 1.228. However, the market for heavy commercial vehicles has been fluctuating for years between approximately 900-1.100 registrations per year, with peaks upwards and downwards.

January 2022 registrations
The strong growth of trailers in 2021 will also continue in 2022. Last January, the number of trailer registrations increased by 33 percent compared to January 2021, to 1.661 units compared to 1.253 last year. The strong growth of light trailers has so far stabilized in 2022. In January 2022, 2.095 light trailers were registered compared to 2.114 in 2021 (-1 percent). Registrations of heavy trailers were on the rise in January and were 8 percent higher at 107 units (99 in 2021), according to the report. Royal RAI Association
