Lufthansa now offers even more options for CO2-neutral flying. The airline has recently been testing a new service that allows passengers to offset the CO2 emissions of their air travel directly on board. Lufthansa passengers can take advantage of this offer on short and medium-haul flights with internet access to and from Munich. The Lufthansa Group airline SWISS will also introduce the test offering on selected long-haul aircraft.

How the new service works

The function is shown to passengers in the onboard entertainment system. Passengers can use a slider to choose how they want their flight's carbon emissions, either through Sustainable Aviation Fuel made from biogenic residues, through high-quality carbon offset projects from the non-profit organization myclimate, or through a combination of both options. Passengers can use this service for free via the internet during the flight on their mobile devices. In the new application, passengers can immediately see how many other passengers have already offset the CO2 emissions from the same flight and thus become part of a growing community.

The new offering uses technology from the “Compensaid” platform for carbon neutral air travel developed by the Lufthansa Innovation Hub in 2 (compensaid.com). It is integrated into the Lufthansa Group Airlines booking platforms and is also an integral part of the Miles & More app.

With a clear strategy towards a sustainable future, The Lufthansa Group takes its responsibility for effective climate protection and has a clearly defined path to CO2 neutrality. The Lufthansa Group aims to halve its net CO2030 emissions by 2 compared to 2019; by 2050, the company aims to achieve a neutral CO2 balance. To this end, The Lufthansa Group focuses in particular on accelerated fleet modernization, the continuous optimization of flight operations, the use of sustainable aviation fuels, and innovative services for CO2-neutral flying. airline.
