Lightyear, the high-tech company developing the world's first long-haul solar car, recently signed a contract with LeasePlan, one of the world's largest Car-as-a-Service companies. LeasePlan thus reserves 5.000 copies of Lightyear's second model, which is expected to go into production in 2024/2025. LeasePlan has already promised to make Lightyear's first model, the Lightyear One, available to its European customers. The Lightyear One will go into production in 2022.

Lightyear recently announced the partnership during a keynote and question session with CEO Lex Hoefsloot and CFO Laurens Weers. During this session, the company shared its strategic roadmap and product vision to make sustainable mobility available everywhere and for everyone through highly efficient solar-powered cars. The second model builds on the technology Lightyear developed for the Lightyear One and will be available in Europe, the US and other global markets starting at €30.000. LeasePlan is one of the world leaders in mobility, with a fleet of approximately 1,8 million vehicles in 29 different countries.

“LeasePlan has been a strong partner of ours since 2018. The recent announcement is testament to their belief in our vision of making sustainable mobility available to all. LeasePlan is at the forefront of the transition to clean vehicles that are less dependent on the charging infrastructure, which also prevents major investments in the charging infrastructure. We are working together to bring a unique vehicle to the market that is truly sustainable.”

“LeasePlan and Lightyear are leading the way together by offering the world's first subscription models for solar-powered cars. With Lightyear, range anxiety, in which drivers are afraid of the limited range of electric vehicles, is a thing of the past, as is having to find an available charging point. This is a huge breakthrough in eliminating emissions from road transport. We look forward to joining forces with Lightyear and introducing motorists to the cleanest, most innovative electric vehicles ever.”

Earlier this year announced Lightyear partnerships with, among others, NXP Semiconductors and Valmet Automotive, Lightyear writes.
