Striking news today when opening the Eindhovens Dagblad. Hermes' electric city buses in Eindhoven are a lot less clean than expected because on cold winter days the heating of the buses runs on diesel. With the fuel that a city bus uses per year, a diesel car can, according to the ED  almost around the world. In the meantime, it has become clear why there is an exhaust on the electric city bus in Eindhoven. The SP wondered about this in the Provincial Council after the party was drawn to it.

zero emission

Can the buses be called emission-free, was another question. The electric buses from manufacturer VDL were recommended at the time because they do not emit any harmful substances. The situation is different because the diesel heater is switched on when the electric heating cannot supply enough capacity. According to Commissioner Christophe van der Maat, there were no better options available at the time. The term clean transport is therefore not an issue in the winter months.

VDL buses

From 2022, 32 new VDL buses will be on display in Eindhoven's cityscape. This is a new step in the greening of the bus fleet. VDL and Hermes signed the contract for the delivery of 32 Citea city buses. These low-floor buses have a length of 12,2 meters. Thanks to the fully electric powertrain, with battery packs in the floor and the motors integrated in the wheels, there is room for up to 110 passengers on board. The 32 new generation Citeas for Hermes will be delivered in the first quarter of 2022.
