An analysis of RDC figures by BOVAG shows that 11,4 percent - or 1 in 9 - of multi-person households in the Netherlands own a caravan or motor home. Especially in the north and east of the Netherlands, relatively many camping equipment is registered, while Randstad residents have considerably fewer caravans and motor homes than the national average.

In total Our country currently has more than 558.000 registered caravans and motorhomes, almost 10.000 more than at the beginning of 2015. According to the most recent data from Statistics Netherlands, there are 4,9 million households in the Netherlands that consist of more than one person. More than a million of these are attributable to South Holland, while Zeeland has approximately 112.000 multi-person households.

DRENTHE TO BUY

Almost a fifth (19 percent) of multi-person households in Drenthe own a caravan or camper, making the Drenten the camping champions of the Netherlands. Friesland follows with more than 17 percent, in Overijssel 15,5 percent of households have a caravan or camper and in Groningen this is more than 15 percent. In the Randstad provinces, however, caravan and motorhome ownership is considerably lower. In South Holland less than 8 percent of multi-person households have their own caravan or camper, in North Holland this is almost 9 percent and Utrecht residents also score less than 10 percent. The difference in space available for parking within and outside the Randstad will undoubtedly play an important role in this distribution.

FRIESLAND BIGGEST JIGGER

Remarkably, Drenthe, with South Holland, is the only province where caravan and motor home ownership has declined in absolute figures since the beginning of 2015; in Drenthe by 0,8 percent to almost 28.000 copies and in South Holland by more than 1 percent to 80.000 copies. Friesland, on the other hand, recorded an increase of nearly 4,5 percent to more than 32.000 caravans and motor homes in recent years. In Flevoland, Zeeland, Limburg, Noord-Brabant and Gelderland, the number also increased faster than the national increase of 1,7 percent.

HALF MORE CAMPERS

The total number of motorhomes in the Netherlands has increased by almost 2015 percent since the beginning of 49, from over 93.000 to almost 138.500. In Utrecht, the number of motorhomes rose the fastest between 1 January 2015 and 1 September 2020: by 55,5 percent to more than 9.000 copies. Friesland (plus 54 percent to more than 9.000), Overijssel (plus 52 percent to almost 12.000) and South Holland (plus 51 percent to more than 18.000) also recorded an increase of more than 50 percent in terms of motorhomes in absolute numbers. Despite the large increase, in South Holland less than 1 in 50 multi-person households own a motor home, while in Friesland and Drenthe it is almost 1 in 20.
