BOVAG is 90 years old today! On May 6, 1930 at 17:00, the Bond Van Car Dealers and Garage Companies was founded in Café Noord-Brabant in Utrecht and is still an association that has a prominent place in society. Our editors also regularly use the car sales figures that they present monthly.
decrease of 53 percent
15.373 new passenger cars were registered last April, a decrease of 53 percent compared to April last year (32.701). In total, 118.458 new cars were registered this year. A decrease of 20 percent compared to the first four months of 2019, when 148.152 copies were registered. This is evident from the official sales figures of RAI Association, BOVAG and RDC.
The sharp drop in sales is a direct result of the corona crisis. The economic confidence of consumers and companies has fallen to an all-time low in a short period of time, and the car and supply industry has largely stalled for a number of weeks. As a result, hardly any new cars were ordered and many of the vehicles already ordered could not be delivered. According to BOVAG and RAI Association, it is currently difficult to predict how the car industry will develop in the coming months and the rest of 2020.
Although the automotive industry is slowly starting up again, the big question is to what extent consumers and companies in the 'one and a half meter economy' will buy new cars. The RAI Association and BOVAG point out that showrooms are simply open and that customers can safely serve customers, whether or not digitally or with a test drive at home, taking into account the RIVM guidelines.
According to the organizations, it is also very important to continue to focus on making our fleet more sustainable through the sale of clean and efficient cars and electric models. In addition to the already planned purchase subsidy for electric cars on 1 July, there will therefore also be a scrapping premium for old cars. Not only does this stimulate the economy, but above all it ensures that we continue to work on cleaner air and a better climate.
