Panteia conducts an annual survey, commissioned by Bustransport Nederland, into the size and composition of coach transport in the Netherlands. The findings are described in the new brochure “Key figures 2018 for Dutch coach transport”.

The most striking figure is that of turnover. In 2018, this rose from 583,5 euros to 589,9 million euros, compared to 2016 million euros for the sector in 534,5. The turnover growth occurred in all types of coach transport: from multi-day trips and day trips to shuttle transport and international scheduled services. The day trips, for example for associations and schools, generate the most turnover annually.

The number of coaches declined for years and increased again in 2017. However, the number of coaches decreased slightly in 2018 compared to 2017 (-3,0%). The number of coach companies remained the same in 2018.

The coaches were used even better in 2018. For example, the number of deployment days per coach increased from 221 to 227 days per year and the number of kilometers traveled grew from 63.761 to an unparalleled height of 71.668 kilometers. The occupancy rate of the coaches has further increased from an average of 46 to 48 travelers per coach. That is why the number of passenger kilometers with 10,4 billion in 2018 is also higher than in the previous 10 years.

Bus transport Netherlands is pleased with Panteia's findings.

“Customers are honoring the benefits of touring by coach again. Not only is the standard price for coach transport significantly lower than for a trip by plane or train, coaches are also desirable for environmentally conscious travelers. The CO2 emissions per passenger kilometer of a coach are lower than those of the train, car and plane. ” Vegter continues: “Besides being sustainable, the coach is also one of the safest ways to travel. Transport in a coach has far fewer fatal accidents per kilometer traveled than in transport by car, ”says Theo Vegter, chairman of Bustransport Nederland.
