The European trade association ACEA announced in various media last week that car sales fell by 2020 percent in March 55,1 due to the corona crisis in Europe compared to March 2019. This represents a decline in the car market in the first quarter at more than 25 per cent. All 27 EU countries are in the car sales sector with this decline.

In the second half of March, the majority of car dealerships and factories in European countries were closed by the corona virus, hence the decline. In the Netherlands, quite a lot of car parts are made, such as metal components by Brabant Alucast, Vredestein tires and sliding roofs at Inalfa. There are also many other companies in the Netherlands such as: NXP, Hydratec, Kendrion, Nedschroef, Aalbers and DSM depending on their turnover from the car industry, according to Quotenet.nl

Car sales were the worst hit in Italy, where car sales fell by more than 2020 percent in March 85 compared to March 2019, followed by France and Spain with a 72 percent decline and Germany, which is the largest car market in Europe with a decline of 38 percent. Volks Wagen Group sold 46 percent less in March this year than in March 2019. The PSA Group sold 68 percent less in March this year than in March 2019.

The Renault Group sold 65 percent less in March this year than in March 2019. Nissan, Ford, Honda and Mazda car brands sold 60 percent fewer cars in March this year. Fiat Chrysler even sold 77 percent fewer cars in March this year. Volvo has been most fortunate said it sold 33 percent fewer cars in March this year.
