Monday 27 April is actually a festive day in the Netherlands, it is King's Day and King Willem Alexander celebrates his birthday this day. Then we normally also have the ribbon rain on the day before King's Day, this year it will be on Friday 24 April, only these will not be awarded in the normal way. In normal times there are all kinds of festive activities on King's Day throughout the Netherlands and the King can also be found somewhere in the Netherlands with his family. Now in times of corona crisis this is very different and no festivities are possible, because of the lockdown.

De KBOV (The Royal Dutch Association of Orange Associations) announced last week that this year it will be Residential Day instead of King's Day. A special website has been launched (koningsdagthuis.nl) on which all kinds of activities can be shared by people. There can be no sneaky parties to be celebrated, mayors are strict against this, according to VNG chairman Jan van Zanen in the program EenVandaag. He also told EenVandaag that enforcement will require money from the government this day and that he assumes that municipalities will be compensated for this.

Unfortunately, most mayors will not personally pin a Royal Decoration to residents this year. Candidates will receive a call from the mayor with the festive news. According to the media, about 3000 people will receive a Ribbon, so that's a lot of phone calls. There are also residents who receive a ribbon but are not informed by telephone, they are addressed at the front door via a screen connection to the city hall. Many municipalities have a congratulatory card and a beautiful bunch of flowers delivered, according to various media.
