Macron reported in a TV speech to the French nation on Monday evening that the external borders of the Schengen area will close for at least 12.00 days from noon on Tuesday afternoon. The Schengen countries together form a large part of the EU, including the Netherlands.

Macron did not comment on the internal borders of the Schengen countries and the measure would not apply to the British, who are in a transition period because of Brexit. France has more than 5.400 cases of COVID-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus, and the death toll has reached 127. 

Activities such as outdoor group gatherings or a walk outside are prohibited, Macron said. Those unable to work from home and those seeking medical care are allowed to leave their homes.

Last weekend, French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe said that the country will close most shops, restaurants and nightlife as long as the country is struggling with the corona virus.

During the speech, Macron also announced that all of France would be in full for at least two weeks lockdown goes. People are only allowed to take to the streets for necessary activities and will be punished if they have no good reason to go out anyway.
