Over the past five years, car ownership has increased most among the over-80s. The Netherlands had nearly 2020 million passenger cars in early 8,7, which is 1,7 percent more than a year ago. This makes the car grow faster than the population of 18 years and older. More than 7,6 million passenger cars are owned by a private individual, 1 million passenger cars are in the name of a company. This reports it CBS based on new figures.

The number of private cars at the beginning of 2020 was 102 thousand (1,4 percent) higher than at the beginning of 2019. The fleet of companies increased by almost 45 thousand (4,5 percent) in the past year. For the first time, there are more than a million company cars. Compared to five years ago, there are 7,5 percent more cars owned by private individuals and 19,1 percent more cars owned by a company.

More than 1 car for 2 people

At the beginning of 2020, more than 7,6 million passenger cars were registered in the name of private individuals. This means that in the Netherlands there were 543 cars per thousand inhabitants aged 18 or older. At the beginning of 2015 there were 528. Car ownership is highest among 50 to 65 year olds. In this age group there are 679 cars per thousand inhabitants. Car ownership is the lowest among 18 to 25-year-olds with 172 cars per thousand inhabitants. The car ownership of people over 80 is more than twice as high as that of 18-25 year olds.

More elderly people with a car

Car ownership has increased most in the past five years among the over-80s. At the beginning of 2015, they had 324 cars per thousand inhabitants, at the beginning of 2020 this will be 375 cars. The car ownership of young people up to the age of 30 is slightly lower in 2020 at 283 cars per thousand inhabitants than at the beginning of 2015. Although the car fleet in this age group was lower in 2020, the number of people in this age group increased. As a result, the share of cars that this group owned remained virtually the same.

At the beginning of 2020 and the beginning of 2015, 10 percent of private passenger cars were owned by a 30-minner. People over 80 own 9 percent of all private passenger cars. Five years earlier, this share was 7 percent. 30 to 65 year olds own 65 percent of all passenger cars.
