The government's travel advice was not clear. We would have benefited more from code red for Lombardy. In the north of Italy, some 16 million people are being quarantined until early April. That has the Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte announced at a press conference. The measure is intended to prevent the spread of the new corona virus. These are residents of the Lombardy region, the largest city of Milan, and 14 provinces in the area.

To date, Italy had quarantined eleven villages with a population of 50.000 in the Lombardy region and parts of the Venice area.

Altogether, about 16 million people live in the extensive quarantine area, which is about a quarter of the Italian population that goes into quarantine. The main city in the Lombardy region is Milan. It is Italy's financial capital and has a population of just under 1,4 million people.

Economic blow

“Lombardy, Veneto and Emilia Romagna are the worst affected areas, but they account for more or less 30% of the gross national product of all of Italy. So it is a huge economic blow. Closing this region will not really help with that. ”
