Whether Greta Thunberg has encouraged the Swedes to make less use of aviation or whether this is “flygskamIs not clear, but domestic air travel has fallen as climate-conscious Swedes opt for the train. In 2019, more than 40 million passengers flew to or from the country's ten airports, a decrease of 4 percent from 2018's all-time record of more than 42 million passengers.

The decrease was mainly due to domestic travel, while total international travel decreased to a lesser extent. International traffic increased at a number of Sweden's airports, notably at Göteborg Landvetter Airport, Sweden's second largest airport.

In 2019, a total of more than 40 million passengers flew to or from Swedavia airports, a decrease of 4 percent compared to 2018, when Swedish airports had more than 42 million passengers for the first time ever. International passenger numbers dropped 2 percent to nearly 28 million, while domestic passenger numbers were about 12,4 million, down 9 percent from 2018.

Stockholm Arlanda Airport, Sweden's largest airport, had more than 25,6 million passengers in 2019, down 4 percent from 2018. International travel was down 4 percent and domestic travel was down 8 percent.

From the statistics passenger volume at Gothenburg Landvetter airport appears to have decreased by a total of 2 percent from 2018 to nearly 6,7 million. However, international traffic, which accounts for most of the traffic at the airport, continued to grow to nearly 5,5 million passengers.

Swedavia has carried out ambitious sustainability work for years. All ten of its airports should have no fossil carbon dioxide emissions in their operations by 2020. Swedavia is also actively working to promote the industry's transition to biofuel, and aims to use five percent of all fuel to refuel aircraft at Swedish airports by 2025 by fossil free. Since 2016, Swedavia has purchased approximately 450 tons of fuel per year, equivalent to the volume that the company uses for business purposes on flights.
