The official figures from BOVAG, RAI Association and RDC show that a total of 2019 new passenger cars were registered in 446.114 and Volkswagen remained the most sold car. That is 0,6 percent more than the previous year. In December, large numbers, especially electric, cars were delivered for the business market, in order to take advantage of the low addition of 2019.

The addition for private use of business electric cars has increased from 1% to 4% as of 8 January, insofar as it concerns the first 45.000 euros of the list price. The amount above that limit is subject to 22% additional tax, as is also calculated on the entire value of fossil fuel business cars. For the electric cars registered before 1 January, an additional tax of 4% applies over the first 50.000 euros. The electric car that was by far the most registered in 2019 was the Tesla Model 3, with 29.922 units.

More than 50.000 electric

The exact figures per fuel type are not yet known, but according to BOVAG and RAI Association, more than 2019 new electric cars were registered in 50.000. For 2020, the sector organizations for the entire market are currently assuming a sales level of 425.000 passenger cars, of which at least 10 percent are electric. Due to the increase in the additional tax liability on 1 January, many electric cars were still registered in 2019.

The effect of this is that the first months of 2020 will show lower numbers. In the coming year, many manufacturers with a variety of electric models will come onto the market. Since the additional tax rate for e-cars will be increased again from 1 January 2021 (from 8 to 12 percent), there may be another run towards the end of the year, such as last December.
