Dutch pumping stations have been selling more and more types of biodiesel in recent years. Last winter, more pump owners and motorists experienced problems with this fuel. In order to improve the quality of biodiesel, NEN has amended the foreword to the European biodiesel specification.

Biodiesel is a diesel fuel with properties that are very similar to ordinary diesel. The fuel is made by chemical processing (esterification) of fatty acids. The raw material for this can be rapeseed oil, sunflower oil, but also used cooking oil. The final product must meet the standard for biodiesel, NEN-EN 14214. This contains requirements that must guarantee operability at lower temperatures. There are different requirements for winter and summer.

The requirements for biodiesel are now clarified in the new national preface. NEN-EN 14214 + A2: 2019 provides guidance for suppliers to meet requirements in an alternative way - by measuring unsaturated mono-glycerides. Suppliers are urged to take the instructions to heart as of this winter.

NEN: what is it and what does it do?

Good agreements about products, services and working methods are important. If safety is at stake, they are even of vital importance. Such as agreements about playground equipment, homes, evacuation plans and cyber security. In the Netherlands, NEN has been the center of standardization for 100 years. NEN helps companies and other parties to make clear and applicable agreements among themselves. NEN also represents Dutch companies and parties to make agreements with centers in other countries at European and even international level.
