EU Ministers of Transport, Infrastructure and Communications met in Brussels on 20 September 2019 to conduct a comprehensive policy debate on how to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The agenda included how to ensure that the EU fulfills its climate commitments under the Paris Agreement.

After the meeting on emission reductions took place Sanna Marin, the Finnish Minister of Transport and Communications and also chairman of the meeting that the outcome was encouraging.

“It is clear that we need to do more to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to stop global warming. And the transport sector must and will play a crucial role in this. Member States are prepared to use a wide range of options: technological options, political options, changing our behavior ”.

No solution for emission reductions is sufficient, but we will get there with the right policy mix and by taking advantage of the opportunities offered by innovation and digitization. The discussion provided a good basis for further efforts for carbon-free mobility and a carbon-neutral society.

Next Tuesday, 24 September, the Transport, Telecommunications and Energy Council will exchange views on the Commission communication on the design of national energy and climate plans and on the energy sector beyond 2030.
