Last week, State Secretary Stientje van Veldhoven announced in a letter that she wants a payment system where travelers can pay via a bank card or mobile phone, for example. Rover is pleased with these plans to introduce new payment methods. It will become possible to pay with bank card or mobile.

Although the ease of use of the card is appreciated by travelers, it is time for a contemporary system, Van Veldhoven wrote. The OV chip card is therefore due for replacement. The State Secretary hopes that the new payment methods can be introduced in 2021. According to Van Veldhoven, the new method could also be used to pay for parking, public transport bicycles, shared cars and (water) taxis.

Rover states that it is good to develop payment systems that rely much more on the convenience of travelers.

“Although the OV chip card is a convenient payment method for many travelers, there are still many travelers who come up against the limits of the system. Think of travelers who travel with multiple carriers or who have to pass a gate when changing trains, ”said Rover spokesman Sanne van Galen. "We hope that new payment methods can immediately offer a good solution for this."

Rover would like to emphasize that there should be a wide range of payment methods. Bank cards and mobile phones are not the solution for everyone, according to Van Galen. They would therefore like to think along about the types of payment methods used for other different groups. Rover also does not want the bill to be placed with the traveler, "as we have often seen happen with the OV chip card," says Sanne van Galen.
